If you wanted to make a video showing how standing at your Readydesk burns 30% more calories than sitting, how would you do it?
We tried answering that question and ended up researching licensed flamethrower operators, getting two vans stuck in desert sand, and melting actual wet blankets.
Here’s the result:
For too long, sitting in one has been the default position for desk jobs. Our hope is to bring more people to their feet, more often. This lowers the risk of disease as you burn more calories. Stand often. Sit less.
The video is one continuous shot, filmed on a special Sony DSLR that captures images at a high frame-rate. We wanted a flamethrower torching the chairs, but it was too expensive and inconvenient. What you see is the third chair we burned; we had four more ready to go, but had used up all our fire extinguishers.
This location is two hours east of San Diego, deep in the desert on private land. Sean Horton and his crew were recording audio, video, and taking photo stills. We were a solid group of folks. Six dudes who, thankfully, were all good at digging holes and pushing cars.
This is textbook desert: sparse vegetation and a lot of sand that can turn soft, quickly. The vans got stuck three separate times. We would collect sage branches and jam them under the tires for traction. It was like nature’s winch.
As dusk hit the mountains, our tires reached asphalt. Two hours of winding roads and rolling freeways, we were home, our melted chairs responsibly disposed of and our cat-burglar clothes reeking of burnt plastic.
It was one of the funnest business days we've had since launching on Kickstarter a year and a half ago.
